Senior‑led
qualitative
intelligence
We bridge the gap between consumer behaviour and board‑level strategy.

Why Us?
A Bridge Between You And Your Customers
Companies are drowning in big data (quantitative) but lack the 'why' (qualitative) behind consumer shifts, especially in a volatile economy.
That’s where we come in: Cowan Saint Qual is a boutique, director-led qualitative consultancy. We turn complex human behaviour into clear, actionable insight that helps businesses make smarter, more intuitive decisions.
What We’ve Done
25 Years Of Asking Questions
25 Years Of Asking Questions
Directors, Kenny Cowan and Lucie Saint, have been in the qualitative industry for over 25 years. Since starting out, we’ve seen eight Prime Ministers come and go. We’ve helped brands go green, go global, go digital — and sometimes go back to the drawing board.
We’ve spoken to people everywhere: in boardrooms, kitchens, bathrooms, cars, offices, cafés, restaurants, bars, spas, banks, and on the street. We’ve conducted research from the West Coast of America to Weston-super-Mare, from Southport to Soweto.
We’ve talked to people about everything from WD-40 to laundry detergent, toilet cleaner, breakfast cereal, beer, holidays, The National Lottery, healthcare, deodorant and cars.
Above all, we’re known for our clear thinking, expert moderation, deep analysis and presentations that genuinely engage.

What We Offer

With a trusted network of international partners, we deliver research both in the UK and globally.
Strategic & Tactical
We support both strategic and more tactical briefs, including: Brand strategy, Creative development, NPD, Concept testing, Comms development, and Habits research.

Video Output
Working closely with a professional filmmaker, we can create bespoke short films that bring research findings to life and add real impact to debriefs.
Deep Dives
Methodologies
Online Research
Remote methodologies of online depth interviews and focus groups that maintain the richness of in-person research.
Why Online Qualitative Research?
Clients can observe research as it happens, providing immediate feedback and direction to moderators. This real-time involvement ensures the research stays aligned with strategic objectives and allows for course corrections during the session.
Online research eliminates geographical constraints, allowing us to connect with respondents across different regions without the expense and logistics of travel.
Stakeholders from multiple offices or countries can participate simultaneously in research observation, breaking down geographical barriers and ensuring consistent understanding across global teams.
Multiple team members can observe and discuss insights in real-time through chat functionality, fostering collaborative sense-making and immediate strategic alignment on research findings.
Digital Methodologies: Modern Tools for Deep Insights.
Our online qualitative methodologies leverage cutting-edge digital platforms to maintain the richness of traditional research while adding new dimensions of insight.
- Online focus groups and depth interviews
- Online communities and bulletin boards
- Diary studies
- Digital collage exercises

Face-to-face Research
Sometimes it's important to literally be in front of people.
Why Focus Groups Matter?
Harnessing group dynamics for deeper insights and creative breakthroughs.
Groups reveal how people influence each other's opinions and behaviours. We observe social norms, peer pressure effects, and consensus building that individual interviews cannot capture.
The collective intelligence of a group often generates ideas and insights that no individual could produce alone. We facilitate creative brainstorming and co-creation sessions.
We deliberately create constructive conflict between different viewpoints to stress-test ideas and uncover weaknesses that consensus might hide.
Groups provide immediate feedback on concepts and ideas, allowing for real-time iteration and refinement based on genuine consumer response.
Face-to-face Research
We offer a range of methodologies:
- Focus groups
- Depth / paired depth interviews
- Mini-groups
- Conflict groups
- Co-creation workshops

Training
Many clients do not wish to simply watch research or listen to the findings; they want to get fully immersed in the consumer world and conduct interviews themselves: we can ensure that you do so fully prepared
We don’t pretend that we can turn clients into professional interviewers overnight, but we can make sure if you are doing interviews that you feel confident, make your interviewee relaxed and get the most insight you can in the time available. Lucie and Kenny have trained MRS delegates for 20 years and are well versed in getting you to a point of interviewing confidence.
You may also simply wish to better understand what makes a good moderator by learning some of the skills yourself.

What we offer
Firstly, our training courses are centred around your needs. Hence, we offer:
- Online interview training
- Face-to-face and group discussion training
- In-home and shopper interview training
Relatedly, the courses we offer can take place online, in a viewing facility or at your offices.
Our approach
We believe the only way for you to be able to interview confidently is to get your hands dirty in training; we always train you with real respondents. We will of course spend plenty of time tutoring you on the key approaches and techniques you will need and of course, what to avoid; but this is only a precursor to actually practising with an individual.
Typically, we will spend a few hours tutoring, then another few hours practising with respondents, before a feedback session

International Research
Navigating the nuance of international markets with cultural intelligence and local expertise.
A brand message that sings in the UK might fall flat—or offend—in Southeast Asia. Our international practice is built on thirty years of cross-cultural sensitivity. We ensure your global strategy is robust enough to travel, but flexible enough to land.

Why International Research Expertise?
Cultural intelligence that transforms global challenges into opportunities.
Leveraging a trusted network of senior partners built over 35 years—from Shanghai to São Paulo—we deliver culturally attuned insights without the bloat of a global network. We act as your central hub, translating meanings, not just languages.
While respecting local differences, we identify common themes that transcend borders. This balance ensures your global strategy maintains consistency while adapting to local cultural contexts.
We help brands avoid cultural missteps that can damage reputation and market entry. Our deep cultural understanding prevents costly mistakes and ensures respectful market engagement.
